Friday 12/16th/2016: A New World Christmas!

El Fuego Early Music Ensemble presents a Benefit concert for Kidznotes (Music for social change). Friday, December 16th, 2016 7:00 p.m. El Fuego will perform: a selection of fun Villancicos or Christmas songs by Mateo Flecha (1481-1553) and composers from colonies of South America. Be transported to the time of the Conquistadores by listening to rich sounds and contagious rhythms in vocal and instrumental music with stories about the nativity. On September 3rd, 2016, IBERICA Early Music Festival presented: A Saturday morning of lectures, workshops focusing on Spanish Early music. Recorder, viola da gamba and lute classes. Self-accompanying techniques; Lecture demonstration on loud band instruments and Mateo Flecha "Ensaladas" and a concert featuring "Love is out!" a zarzuela by Sebastian Duron

To sing or not to sing...a Villancico!

 EL FUEGO Early Music Ensemble in collaboration with SONAM, presented "Sublime Love", a selection of sacred and secular cantatas from the 1600s New World Colonies from Guatemalan, Peruvian and Mexican sources: Choral compositions by Tomás de Torrejón y Velasco and Poetry by Mexican nun Sor Juana Inés De la Cruz (called the Shakespeare of the Spanish Golden Era in the New World). Salomé Sandoval, soprano, baroque guitar, archlute and artistic direction; Malina Rauschenfels, voice, violin and cello; Roman Testroet, tenor; Molly Barnes, violin; Jennifer Streeter, Harpsichord. Choral Ensemble SONAM directed by Allan Friedman. Translations and art were projected onto a screen. This concert was part of the Historically Informed Performances Festival.

On Sunday August 30th, 2015, El Fuego presented: A Spanish Baroque Zarzuela (Music play) by Antonio de Literes (1673-1747).

“Acis and Galatea” is a play with music about how the shepherd Acis and his rival the Cyclop Polyphemus fall in love with the sea nymph Galatea. Fun for all ages!

EL FUEGO Early Music Ensemble presents "The last Conquistador" (The last Conqueror): narrative, music, poetry and art from Spain's Golden Age and New Spain colonies (Today's Mexico and New Mexico), surrounding the time of Juan de Oñate y Salazar (1550–1626). Salomé Sandoval, voice, vihuela, baroque guitar and artistic direction; Roman Testroet, voice; Molly Barnes, and Sarah Lodico Wines viols; Charles Wines, winds; Laura Grimaldi, percussion. Special guest performer: Robbie Link, bass viol.


This October, explore the world of Juan de Oñate with us: visionary or mass murderer? Sacred and Secular Polyphony by Gaspar Fernandes, Romances by Lope de Vega and the following traditions in Liturgical and Secular plays. Are you up for an adventure?

El Fuego presented: A selection of medieval chant from the Huelgas Codex (c1300) and songs from "Cantigas de Santa Maria". Devotional songs to the Virgin Mary and medieval chant. Travel to Northern Spain through music and beautiful poetry in Galician-Portuguese to get an insight of the minds of 1200-1300s praying souls.
